Mischief and Rogue’s Story—Growing Confidence and Trust

Mischief and Rogue, two beautiful tortoiseshell cats, came into Craig’s home as kittens during Covid lockdown. Mischief quickly became the confident and curious sibling, often lounging in the living room and happily interacting with her family. Rogue, however, was much more reserved. She preferred spending time alone in the bedroom or outside, avoiding visitors entirely. When they rehomed a new dog, Rogue was nowhere to be seen.

Craig worried about Rogue with the change in family dynamics, especially when she stayed outside in bad weather whenever visitors were in the house. He longed to help both cats feel secure and confident, so they reached out to me for support.

Mischief had a curiosity that made her the perfect candidate for demonstrating the techniques that Craig could use with Rogue.

We began with feathers and then brushes, a gentle technique to help cats relax and build trust. Mischief responded beautifully, rubbing her face against the feather and even allowing me to stroke her back. These moments of connection were key to building her comfort with touch.

Over time, I introduced other calming techniques, including body wraps (see resources for video on this) and gentle touches with both feathers and then hands. Mischief’s willingness to engage gave Craig the confidence to try these approaches with Rogue.

Rogue’s journey was slower but just as rewarding. Craig practiced short, gentle sessions with Rogue, using the techniques we introduced with Mischief. At first, Rogue only allowed a few feather strokes at a time. Over the weeks, she began seeking out these interactions, purring and moving toward Craig’s hand for more.

The real breakthrough came when visitors were in the house. Normally, Rogue would flee outside, but after a few weeks of doing this work, she stayed indoors, albeit hidden in the bedroom. By the end of the visit, Rogue even ventured into the living room, a huge step forward in her confidence.

The changes in both cats have been remarkable.

Rogue’s transformation has been particularly heartwarming. She has started to feel more at ease indoors, even when strangers are present. Craig shared how Rogue’s newfound bravery has brought the whole family closer together. Rogue now joins them all on family evenings together. She doesn’t bolt outside during storms. She is settled with the new dog and participates in mutual grooming and sharing a food licking mat together.

A Happy Ending

Helping Mischief and Rogue wasn’t just about teaching them to relax; it was about building trust and confidence, one small step at a time. Craig summed it up perfectly: “Seeing Rogue so much braver and Mischief so content brings us all so much joy. We couldn’t have done it without you.”
