Darci, a 3.5-year-old Poodle-Chihuahua mix, struggled with fear and anxiety. Walks were a challenge—she’d freeze, bark at other dogs and people, or try to rush back home. Often, her mum, Mandi, carried her instead of enduring the stress. Even at home, Darci was concerned about visitors and would bark a lot. Mandi longed to see Darci enjoying life, but she didn’t know where to start.

Together, we set out to rebuild Darci’s confidence, one Chihuahua sized step at a time.
We began in the safety of Darci’s home. Using calming activities, I encouraged her to explore at her own pace and find moments of relaxation. These small successes were the foundation for her growing trust in herself and her surroundings. As Darci grew more confident, we gradually reintroduced short walks, letting her decide how far to go and focusing on her comfort every step of the way.
As Darci began to show progress, we introduced joint sessions with Ollie, another dog I work with. These sessions were held in a new environment at Ollie’s home, giving Darci a chance to build confidence in unfamiliar settings with another dog. The sessions were designed to be slow and supportive, incorporating activities that encouraged exploration and relaxation.
Darci started by observing her surroundings, gradually venturing further and exploring independently. Darci soon interacted with Ollie, and soon she was initiating play. She invited him to chase her, wagging her tail and allowing him to approach and sniff her. Each step showed just how far she’d come.
With her confidence growing, Darci’s walks became a completely different experience. She started showing curiosity about her surroundings, sniffing and exploring with enthusiasm. Mandi’s role as her calm, supportive guide helped Darci feel safe. By closely watching Darci’s body language and responding to her needs, Mandi provided the reassurance that her little dog could trust the world again.

Darci now eagerly anticipates walks, her tail wagging happily and her steps purposeful. I often see her striding confidently past my home, a testament to how far she’s come.
For Mandi, the change has been transformative. Walks, once a source of stress, are now a time to bond and enjoy their family time together. “Seeing Darci so curious and happy again has been amazing,” Mandi shared. “I feel so much more confident knowing how to support her.”
